Hi, folkses. Just in time for July 4th, here's some Underground Railroad-related news.

UR will be playing the Ridglea Friday, July 9th. We'll commence the rocking around 9:30pm. The mighty Shaolin Death Squad will be playing downstairs that night, as well. Our July Prog Night will happen on Sunday the 18th. Usual time, 7-10pm.

Also, I, Bill Pohl, will be playing with a few other musicians (including Mark Cook from Minefield and 99 Names of God) at the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth for a series of improvised performances with a group of dancers. Those shows will be:

Sunday, July 18 @ 1pm
Saturday, July 24 @ 12pm
Sunday, July 25 @ 3pm

These are really short performances, not longer than 15 minutes or so, probably. There're free, too.

New album news: Kurt is recording vocals finally. This is the last step before mixing, so we may finish this in the next couple months.

I look foward to seeing you at a show this month.

All the best,
Bill

A regrettable update

I've had to excuse myself from the evening due to other commitments. I'm sad I won't be there, as the apostles John, Mark, Bill and Jack will surely testify righteously.

My apologies,

Kurt Rongey

Review of Mad Jack McMaddd's appearance at Cattle Prog 2002

From Expose; Issue No.26; February, 2003
by Sean McFee
Next was Mad Jack McMaddd, the only other band I was not familiar with. Turns out it's a side project of Bill Pohl and Michael Richardson from Underground Railroad, along with Dave Gryder (Storm at Sunrise) on drums. It's basically a guitar/bass/drums fusion trio, playing a mix of covers and originals, pretty much for fun. Given the nature of the project I'm wondering if they were covering for another band that couldn't make it, but I never got the scoop. The question is somewhat irrelevant anyway, because they smoked. Pohl's guitar playing reminded me of John McLaughlin circa Mahavishnu Orchestra's early days, and Gryder was positively hyperactive on the kit, evoking comparisons to Billy Cobham or mid 60s Tony Williams, or even Furio Chirico of Arti e Mestieri. Gryder leaves no room to breath, with fills for any conceivable interval that silence might otherwise occupy. Covers included a Mahavishnu tune as well as Steely Dan's "King of the World" with Richardson on vocals. (which I actually had to ask around to find out, which shows what I know). I was quite impressed how Pohl and Richardson, who obviously wear the sympho hats for Underground Railroad, could shift gears so effectively into this musical style. The set was on the short side, around 55 minutes, but too much more than that probably would have defeated my attention span so I can't complain.
